Are you looking for a better way to organize your music? Music is sound that is intentionally ordered (unlike ‘noise’) and it comes from many different cultures. This involves different frequencies, harmonies, instruments, melodies, and more. There are a few different routes you can go when organizing your music library:
-
Genre Folders
-
Artist-Specific Playlists
-
Moods & Vibes
-
Occasion Folders
Studies have found that music sounds different to each individual! Organizing your music library will not only improve the listening experience, but may help you feel at peace.

Genre Folders
Do you have thousands of songs in your music library?
A great way to start organizing your music library is to sort songs by your favorite genres. These will be top-level folders:
- Country
- EDM
- Hip-Hop & RnB
- Reggae
- Rock
- etc…
Next, after you’ve created new genre folders, you’re going to want to sort your library by genre. Then, drag all of the appropriate songs into that folder. After all of the songs you want are all in one playlist in the genre folder, you can create playlists to specific moods & vibes.
Artist-Specific Playlists
Organizing your music library by your favorite artists is a great way to group their songs in one place. Sometimes some artists are featured in other songs – often with great verses that stand out in their career.
Now you can ditch the curated playlists that never include “that one song” that’s your favorite.
Nesting an “artists” folder inside of each genre folder will help keep your favorite artists’ songs easily accessible.
For example, if there was an “EDM” genre folder, you would add an “Artists” subfolder. Inside of your “Artists” folder, you would make artist-specific playlists:
- EDM
- Artists
- Avicii
- Diplo
- Kygo
- Marshmello
- etc…
- Artists
Moods & Vibes
You have your genre and artists folders… now what? Time to make playlists.
- Hip-Hop
- Artists
- Big Sean
- Juice WRLD
- Post Malone
- Trippie Redd
- Wiz Khalifa
- 💸🛩💸
- Coolin 🎧
- Detroit 🏙
- Hard Work Pays Off 🤑
- OldSkool 📻
- Artists
Vibes can be hard to describe; if you’re at a loss for words, we title playlists with emojis! Here are some examples of what we’re talking about:
- 🌲🌌🌕 – *for chill night vibes (Alan Walker, Kid Cudi, The Weeknd, etc.)
- 🎸☠️🤘 – *for punk rock vibes (Blink 182, MGK, Travis Barker, etc. )
- 🏝🤙☀️ – *for sunny day vibes (Bob Marley, Dirty Heads, Sublime, etc.)
Occasion Folders
When we open our music app of choice, there’s usually a specific reason why you want to listen to music.
Starting a workout? Boom… playlist for that.
Parting on a boat? Boom… playlist for that.
Need chill vibes for concentration? Boom… playlist for that.
Creating an “Occasions” folder will save you on sidebar space. These folders will hold your playlists geared towards the same occasion… but alternate playlists for different vibes. You can always mix the naming structure with emojis, text, or both:
- Parties:
- 🚨📢🚨
- Cinco de Mayo
- Summer Country ☀️🚤
- Workouts:
- 🏀⛹🏻♂️🗑
- Rock & Roll
- Hip-Hop Workout 😤
There are many different music streaming services available. Here are a top few that have playlist saving/music library capabilities.
- Apple Music
- Spotify
- Pandora
- SoundCloud
- *YouTube – For all the party hosts, this is a great way to have music videos playing on TVs.
- Deezer
